We will begin by examining your mouth and going through the consent process. We will take a shade of your teeth, and some photos of your teeth . We will then take a mold of your teeth so that a custom-made clear tray is fabricated. This stops any of the whitening agent from touching your gums, which may bleach them.
Once the trays are fabricated, you will be given the bleaching agent and the trays to whiten at home. There are two kinds of bleaching agent; Day-use and Night-use.
Place a drop of bleaching agent in your custom-tray on the front surface of each tooth you want to whiten. Most people only want to whiten the visible teeth when they smile - these are usually the front 8 teeth. Then wear your custom tray, for the following length of time:
Day-use gel: 90 minutes per day
Night-use gel: overnight 7 hours per night
You can control how white your teeth become. For most people, using the treatment protocol for 2 weeks will bring out the white smile they wanted.
Our day-use gel is 6% Hydrogen Peroxide, while we use 16% Carbamide Peroxide for night-use gel.
Before you start treatment, the dentist will check if you are suitable. When performed by a qualified and registered dentist, Teeth whitening is a safe procedure. The bleaching agent used is safe for teeth and gums.
As with any dental procedure there are some risks. These include:
Temporary sensitivity - this can be minimised by using a desensitizing toothpaste while you are whitening.
Gum bleaching - You may notice your gums going white around your teeth, with some discomfort. This is usually caused by placing too much gel in the tray. Remove the tray and let your gums rest for a couple of hours. You will notice the colour of gums returning to normal. You can then continue your treatment protocol, but take care to place less bleaching gel in the tray.
Whitening is not suitable in the following circumstances:
Whitening only works on natural teeth. False teeth, fillings, crowns, bridges and veneers will not change colour. However these can be replaced after treatment to match your whiter smile.
